Blogs in the Classroom

I think it would be productive for my students to blog over the summer about different activities they're involved in and then when we return to school in the Fall, the students could discuss what they read on each other's blogs. I would love to hear about different sewing projects, traveling or summer jobs the students are involved in. I think the students would love to showcase their work on a blog so other students could see their ideas and creations without the student actually having to bring in things for a "show and tell" session. Since I teach about positive peer interaction and building relationships, I think it would be a wonderful tool to use to teach the students how to give positive feedback to each other. I teach Family & Consumer Sciences in grade 6-8.

  1. This is a great way to integrate their real life experiences into your curriculum. It is kind of like a fancy show and tell of how they spent their summer vacations. Great idea!

  2. I love this idea. It's simple and not so time consuming.
I teach at the high school level. For the last two years, it's been an assignment for each student to choose one book out of a selection to read over the summer. When we return, out of my advisement group of 14-15 students only one or two have read the book or a portion of the book.
Do you feel optimistic that all of your students will do this
Two challenge questions for you: 1. Do you feel optimistic that all of your students will do this assignment over the summer break? 2. Do all students within your class have access to the internet? If not, have you thought of an alternate assignment?

    1. I don't think all of my students will do this because they don't all have access to a computer. I will suggest that they use the public library computers as a resource and if that is not possible, I will ask the students to keep a written journal. Some of my students are very creative and they like to draw so if I ask them to incorporate some creativity into the journal, I think it will inspire them more to participate.

  3. I like your idea of keeping kids producing content even during the summer months. I am curious, do you have the same students two years in a row? I was wondering because it seems very unusual for the majority of students to give up their own time to post on an educational blog. If you have your students the following year maybe you could offer extra credit by participating over the summer.

    1. I do have a lot of the same students year after year since I teach 6, 7 and 8th grade. I will definitely offer extra credit to students!

    2. I really like this idea. I think the students would benefit greatly by blogging their experiences. It may actually build some friendships that may not have formed otherwise.
